Equipment

  • Frying Pan
  • Food Processor
  • Oven
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups mozzarella
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup almond flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch sea salt

Instructions

  • Start by preheating your oven to 180 degrees Celsius / 356 Fahrenheit (electric) or 160C / 320F fan-assisted. This sets the stage for perfectly baked pretzels.
  • Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This will prevent the pretzels from sticking and make cleanup a breeze.
  • In a medium pan over very low heat, combine the mozzarella and cream cheese. Stir continuously until melted. If you prefer, you can also melt the cheese in the microwave for about one minute.
  • Once melted, remove the pan from heat. Allow the cheese mixture to cool slightly, then add the egg. Stir until fully combined. If your egg is cold, gently heat the mixture to avoid cooking the egg.
  • Now, add the almond flour and baking powder. Mix until fully combined, resulting in a dough that looks like a big mozzarella ball.
  • Pinch off a piece of dough weighing around 30g and roll it in your hands to stretch it to about 20 cm long. If it's too sticky, lightly oil your hands to handle the dough more easily.
  • Form the dough into a classic pretzel shape and place it on the prepared baking sheet. With this recipe, you can make about 10 pretzels.
  • Sprinkle the pretzels with sea salt for added flavor. This is a crucial step that enhances the overall taste.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 17 minutes or until they are nicely browned. Remember to rotate the baking sheet halfway through to ensure even baking.
  • Once done, remove the pretzels from the oven and let them cool slightly before enjoying!

Notes

  • Tip 1: Leftover pretzels can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Enjoy them cold or reheat them in the microwave for a warm snack.
  • Tip 2: You can freeze the dough before baking. Once formed, wrap the pretzels tightly in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before baking.
  • Tip 3: These pretzels pair wonderfully with dips. Consider serving them with a cheese dip or mustard for a delightful flavor contrast.
  • Tip 4: The pretzels taste best straight out of the oven. Enjoy them warm for the ultimate experience!
