Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Frying Pan
  • Chef's Knife
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Wooden Spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef filet
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ napa cabbage
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 green onion
  • 2 red chilies
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 1 bunch cilantro

Instructions

  • Begin by placing a non-stick or cast iron fry pan over high heat. Allow it to get very hot. This step is crucial as it helps achieve a perfect sear on the beef.
  • Once the pan is heated, brush the beef filet with neutral oil. Sear the beef for 40 seconds on each side. Watch for a beautiful crust to develop while the inside remains tender.
  • In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved. This dressing will infuse the beef with savory flavors.
  • Take 2 tablespoons of the dressing and brush it over the seared beef. Reserve the remaining dressing for later use.
  • Wrap the seasoned beef in glad wrap or cling film. Chill in the fridge for at least an hour or 30 minutes in the freezer. This chilling allows the flavors to meld and makes slicing easier.
  • When you're ready to serve, cut the napa cabbage, carrot, green onion, and red chilies into thin strips. The thinner, the better, as they will fit perfectly into the rolls.
  • Carefully slice the chilled beef into thin pieces. Aim for slices that are about a quarter inch thick; this ensures they’re easy to roll.
  • Lay a piece of beef flat on a plate, and add a piece of each vegetable in the center. The vibrant colors will shine through and make the rolls visually appealing.
  • Drizzle a little of the reserved dressing over each roll for added flavor, then roll the beef tightly around the vegetables. The freshness shines through in every bite.
  • Serve the rolls on a bed of fresh cilantro, and sprinkle with sesame seeds for garnish. Enjoy your masterpiece!
