Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Frying Pan
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Mixing Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Oil Any neutral oil will work here.
  • 1 lb Ground Beef Go for ground/minced beef with some fat content; it will help the sauce have that rich mouthfeel.
  • 2 tablespoons Onion Flakes Onion flakes add an excellent onion flavor without the need to chop onions into tiny pieces.
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 2.5 teaspoons Cumin
  • 2 teaspoons Smoked Paprika
  • 1.5 teaspoons Paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Dried Thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 0.25 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper The cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes add a little kick to the chili.
  • pinch Red Pepper Flakes Feel free to adjust the amount to suit your family's taste.
  • 2.5 cups Water
  • 1 cup Ketchup I use Heinz Ketchup, but you can use your favorite brand here.
  • 0.25 cup Brown Sugar You can use regular white sugar instead, but the brown has a more complex flavor.
  • 0.25 cup Worcestershire Sauce

Instructions

  • Pour the oil into a large skillet or frying pan and heat over medium heat. You’ll know it’s ready when the oil shimmers slightly.
  • Add the ground beef and cook for 6 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns.
  • Add the onion flakes, garlic powder, cumin, smoked paprika, paprika, salt, black pepper, dried thyme, dried oregano, cayenne pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to coat the beef.
  • Add the water and stir until combined. Bring to a simmer.
  • Reduce heat to low and cook uncovered for 60 to 70 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir and simmer for another 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Once thickened, remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving.
