Equipment

  • Coffee/spice grinder

Ingredients

  • 3/4 tablespoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Celery Seed
  • 2 teaspoons Sweet Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Dry Mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 5 leaves Bay Leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon Smoked Paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Freshly Ground White Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1/8 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon Ground Mace
  • 1/8 teaspoon Ground Cardamom
  • 1/8 teaspoon Ground Allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/16 teaspoon Ground Cloves

Instructions

  • 1. Gather all your ingredients. You’ll need salt, celery seed, sweet paprika, ground dry mustard, ground ginger, bay leaves, smoked paprika, freshly ground black pepper, freshly ground white pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, ground nutmeg, ground mace, ground cardamom, ground allspice, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves. Make sure to measure them accurately for the best flavor.
  • 2. Next, place all the measured spices into a coffee or spice grinder. This is where the magic happens! Grinding the spices not only combines them but also releases their essential oils, resulting in a fresher flavor.
  • 3. Turn on the grinder and blend the spices until they form a smooth powder. This might take a minute or two, depending on your grinder. You want to ensure everything is well combined and there are no chunks left!
  • 4. Once blended, taste a little bit of the mix. Adjust any spices if needed. If you want more heat, add a pinch more of the crushed red pepper flakes or black pepper. Remember, this blend should reflect your taste!
  • 5. Transfer the spice blend into an airtight jar. Make sure to label it with the date you made it! Store it in a dark, cool place to keep its flavor intact.
  • 6. For optimal flavor, try to use your Homemade Old Bay Seasoning Recipe within three months, although it can last longer if stored properly. The spices will gradually lose strength over time, so it’s best to use it fresh.

Notes

Instead of the salt and celery seed, you can substitute 1 tablespoon of celery salt.
