Equipment

  • Frying Pan
  • Whisk
  • Oven
  • Grater
  • Chef's Knife
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup Milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Dill Seeds Coarsely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Honey
  • 1/4 cup Canola or Vegetable Oil
  • 3 large Eggs Beaten, at room temperature
  • 2 1/2 cups Whole Wheat Flour Divided
  • 1/4 ounce Instant Yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
  • 3 1/2 cups Packed Grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese Divided
  • 3 tablespoons Chopped Fresh Dill

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, combine milk, dill seeds, and honey and heat over low heat until warmed. Remove from heat. When the mixture has cooled to 120 degrees F, whisk in canola oil and eggs.
  • In a large bowl, combine 1 1/4 cups of whole wheat flour, instant yeast, salt, and 2 cups of cheddar cheese. Add the warm liquid mixture and chopped fresh dill; use an electric mixer to beat for 3 minutes.
  • Add the remaining whole wheat flour; beat for 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Cover the bowl loosely with a clean dish towel. Let the dough rise in a warm draft-free area until doubled, about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Butter a 9-inch loaf pan. Do not try to stir or knead the dough. Spoon half of the risen dough into the buttered pan; sprinkle the remaining 1 1/2 cups of cheddar cheese over.
  • Add the remaining dough to the pan; smooth the top. Cover with a clean dish towel, and let rise in a warm draft-free area until the dough reaches the top of the pan, about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake until the bread is golden brown, about 45 minutes. Remove the bread from the loaf pan and let it cool on a rack. Slice and serve.

Notes

  • Tip 1: Store any leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
  • Tip 2: You can freeze the bread for up to three months. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn.
  • Tip 3: This bread pairs wonderfully with soups and salads. Consider serving it alongside a hearty tomato soup or a fresh garden salad.
  • Tip 4: Enjoy slices toasted with butter for a delightful breakfast or snack. It’s even better when sprinkled with a little more cheddar cheese!
  • Tip 5: Feel free to add other herbs or spices to the mix, such as thyme or oregano, to create your unique flavor profile.
